Description:
Celiac Genetic Blood Test (Labcorp)
A Celiac Genetic Test, also known as a HLA DQ Association, looks for the presence of genes which indicate that a person is predisposed to developing Celiac Disease. This test looks for the presence of 2 genes known as HLA-DQ2 and HLA-DQ8 which are statisitically associated with Celiac. While not evey person who has these genes will develop Celiac, most people with Celiac have one or both of these genes present. Genetic testing for Celiac is typically ordered as either a confirmation for positive results from other Celiac blood tests or to aid in diagnosis when a person's test results are inconclusive.
Celiac Disease may be hereditary and testing is recommended for anyone who has a relative that has been diagnosed.
The Celiac Genetic Test can be ordered by anyone who wishes to see if they have a predisposition for developing Celiac Disease. This test can also be ordered to compliment the results of other blood tests for Celiac to aid in diagnosis.
A Final diagnosis for Celiac Disease should be confirmed by a doctor and may require an intestinal biopsy. For more information on Celiac Disease testing, please visit the Celiac Disease Foundation at www.celiac.org.
