What STDs can be detected by urine testing?
This package includes urine testing for 4 common types of sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
- Chlamydia: A bacterial infection (Chlamydia trachomatis) commonly spread through unprotected sexual contact, including vaginal, anal, and oral sex.
- Gonorrhea: A bacterial infection (Neisseria gonorrhoeae) commonly spread through vaginal, oral, or anal sex
- Mycoplasma Genitium: Another type of bacterial infection. Mycoplasma Genitalium is more common than many people are aware. It is believed to affect 1-2% of the adult population in the USA.
- Trichomoniasis: A parasitic infection (Trichomonas vaginalis) spread by sexual contact.
What are common STD symptoms?
It is important to remember that some people with an STI will have no symptoms or may not experience any symptoms until later after infection. Additionally, many symptoms are common to more than one type of illness, so making a diagnosis based solely on symptoms can be challenging.
Common symptoms of sexually transmitted infections can include:
- Painful burning sensation during urination
- Unusual discharge from the penis or vagina
- Itching, pain, or irritation on or around the genital area
- Pain in the stomach or abdomen
- For women, unusual bleeding between menstrual periods
- For men, pain or swelling in the testicles
Who should take an STD test?
Urine STI testing can be ordered when someone is experiencing symptoms or if they have a sexual partner who has also tested positive. Routine testing for people who are sexaully active is recommended even if they do not have any symptoms, especially for those with multiple partners. Positive test results should be followed up with a doctor or medical professional. If you are diagnosed with an STD and treated, it is also important to test again afterwards to ensure that the treatment was successful.
Please see our STD testing category for more options.
How long does an STD test take?
The turnaround for these results is typically 4-7 business days.
Where can I find an STD urine test near me?
Check our lab finder to locate a collection site in your area.
Note: Result turn around times are an estimate and are not guaranteed. Our reference lab may need additional time due to weather, holidays, confirmation/repeat testing, or equipment maintenance.
Detection Period:
In some people, these tests may be detectable as early as a few days after a suspected exposure. The majority of people will typically be detectable at around 3 weeks after a potential exposure.
The majority of people will be detectable at 3 weeks from a potential exposure or any time after. Some people may be detectable as early as 1 week from exposure.
Requirements:
For the highest level of accuracy, please observe the following:
- Refrain from urinating for at least one hour prior to collection.
- Avoid cleansing the genital area at least one hour prior to collection.
- The sample should be a "first catch" of urine, meaning customers should begin urinating directly into the collection container.
- Fill the specimen cup approximately 20-30 ml. Overfilling the container will dilute the specimen and may reduce the accuracy of the test.
