Description:
Copeptin Blood Test (Labcorp)
This test measures the level of Copeptin in a blood sample. Copeptin is most commonly used to aid in diagnosing Diabetes Insipidus. Diabetes Insipidus is an uncommon condition that results from the body's inability to properly balance its fluid levels. Symptoms of Diabetes Inspidus include extreme thirst, producing large amounts of pale-colored urine, frequent nighttime urination, and craving cold liquids. Diabetes Insipidus should not be confused with Diabetes Mellitus, commonly referred to simply as Diabetes, a disorder related to blood sugar and insulin production.
In addition to identifying cases of Diabetes Insipidus, a copeptin blood test can also help to differentiate between which types of the disorder a person may have. The primary types of Diabetes Insipidus are:
- Central Diabetes Insipidus: Results from damage to the pituitary gland or hypothalamus that prevents the normal production of antidiuretic hormone (ADH.)
- Nephrogenic Diabetes Insipidus: Results from the kidneys being unable to properly process antidiuretic hormone (ADH.)
Copeptin testing is typically ordered when a person is experiencing symptoms of Diabetes Insipidus. Copeptin may be ordered along with an Antidiuretic Hormone (ADH) test.
Turnaround for the online Copeptin blood test is typically 4-8 business days.
