Description:
Creatine Blood Test
This test measures the level of Creatine in the blood. Creatine is an amino acid produced by the Liver, Kidneys, and Pancreas. It is stored in the muscles where it is used for energy. The primary dietary sources of creatine are seafood and red meat. People with vegetarian or vegan diets may suffer from low creatine levels. Creatine is often included in supplements intended to help with exercising.
Conditions that can cause elevated levels of creatine include amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), dermatomyositis, myasthenia gravis, starvation, muscular dystrophies, and trauma.
This test should not be confused with Creatinine. Creatinine is a product of the breakdown of creatine. Creatinine levels are often checked in blood or urine to evaluate kidney damage.
Turnaround for this test is typically 3-7 business days.
