Description:
Creatinine Blood Test
This test measures Creatinine levels in the blood. Creatinine is a waste product produced by the breakdown of creatine in the muscles. Because creatinine is normally excreted from the body through the kidneys, measuring creatinine levels is a way of evaluating kidney function. This test also includes Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate (eGFR). EGFR is calculated based on a person's creatinine levels. It is an estimate of how much blood per minute is being filtered by the kidneys. A decline in kidney function causes lowered eGFR which can lead to the buildup of waste products in the blood.
Creatinine is often measured as part of routine general health testing. It is typically ordered with a Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN) test to evaluate kidney function. Creatinine testing may also be ordered when someone has symptoms of kidney disease, is monitoring treatment for kidney disorders or is about to undergo a procedure involving the administering of drugs which may affect the kidneys.
Creatinine is also included in a Basic Metabolic Panel, Comprehensive Metabolic Panel or Renal Function Panel.
Turnaround time for the Creatinine blood test is typically 1 business day.
