BUN Blood Test
This test measures Urea Nitrogen in the blood. Urea is a waste product produced by the liver during the breakdown of proteins. It is made up of several components including nitrogen. Urea is filtered through the kidneys along with other waste products and removed from the body in the urine. Abnormal BUN levels can be indicative of problems affecting the liver and/or kidneys.
BUN is commonly tested as part of routine general health screening. It is also ordered, commonly with a Creatinine test, when someone is experiencing symptoms of kidney disease.
BUN is also included as part of a Basic Metabolic Panel (BMP), Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP), or Renal Function Panel.
