What is Cyanide?

Cyanide is a potentially deadly chemical.   It is produced naturally by certain types of plants but can also be created synthetically.  Cyanide is sometimes described as having a "bitter almond" smell. However, it does not always have an odor, and not everyone is able to smell it.  Cyanide comes in liquid, solid, and gaseous forms.

How can someone be exposed to Cyanide?

Trace amounts of cyanide are found in a number of foods and do not typically pose any harm.  The most common source of cyanide poisoning is in the workplace.  Cyanide is used in a number of industries, including the production of paper, plastics, and textiles, photography, metallurgy, and pest removal.

What are the symptoms of Cyanide Exposure?

Inhaling cyanide gas will cause symptoms to occur quickly. Symptoms after ingesting solid or liquid cyanide may take longer to develop.

The most common immediate symptoms can include:

• Chest pain
• Dizziness, weakness, or confusion
• Eye pain or tearing up
• Difficulty breathing
• Rapid or slowed breathing
• Rapid or slowed heart rate
• Headache
• Nausea or vomiting

If exposed to large amounts, signs and symptoms include:

• Coma
• Death
• High or low blood pressure
• Loss of consciousness
• Lung injury
• Seizures

Any of these symptoms should be addressed by immediately seeking medical care.
