Erythropoietin Blood Test (Labcorp)
The Erythropoietin Test is used to help diagnose the cause for Anemia. Erythropoietin is a hormone produced by the kidneys in response to low blood oxygen levels. It stimulates the production of red blood cells (RBC's) containing hemoglobin which help to carry oxygen through the body. Irregular levels of Erythropoietin can be linked to different types of Anemia, a condition in which red blood cells and hemoglobin drop below normal. The measurement provided by this test can help a person's doctor to make a more accurate diagnosis and differentiate between different types of Anemia. Because Erythropoietin is produced by the kidneys, this test may also be useful in monitoring chronic kidney disease.
This test is typically ordered after a person has had abnormal results for a Complete Blood Count (CBC). People with kidney disease may order this test periodically to monitor their Erythropoietin levels.
