Description:

Reticulocyte Count Blood Test (Labcorp)

A Reticulocyte Count is used to determine if a person's body is properly producing red blood cells (RBC).  Reticulocytes are produced by bone marrow and develop into mature red blood cells over several days.  This test is used to evaluate bone marrow function when a person has low RBC levels.  It can also aid in the diagnosis of different types of anemia.  A Reticulocyte Count is also useful in monitoring treatment for anemia or when a person is undergoing procedures such as chemotherapy which can affect the bone marrow.

This test is typically ordered as a follow up when someone has abnormal values from a CBC test.  It is also commonly ordered with a CBC when someone is experiencing symptoms of anemia.  It may also be ordered when someone is being treated for anemia to monitor how well they are responding to treatment.

The Reticulocyte Count typically sees results in 1 business day.
