Pancreatic Elastase Fecal Test (Labcorp)
The Pancreatic Elastase Test measures the amount of elastase in a stool sample. Elastase is an enzyme produced by the pancreas that helps to break down fats, proteins, and carbohydrates during digestion. Eventually, elastase is eliminated from the body in the stool. Measuring the level of elastase in the stool can help to determine if the pancreas is functioning properly. When elastase levels are lower than normal, it can be a sign of pancreatic insufficiency. This is a condition where the pancreas doe not produce enough enzymes to properly digest food and absorb nutrients. Conditions that can impair the pancreas include pancreatic cancer, pancreatitis, and cystic fibrosis.
The fecal pancreatic elastase test is typically ordered when a person is experiencing symptoms of pancreatic insufficiency. Common symptoms include stomach cramps, bloating, malnutrition, unexplained weight loss, and fatty foul-smelling stool.
