Gabapentin Urine Drug Test (Labcorp)
This test looks for the presence of Gabapentin in the urine. Results are qualitative and provide a positive or negative response. Gabapentin is an anticonvulsant drug that is used to prevent seizures as well as in the treatment of nerve pain from shingles. Prescriptions of Gabapentin have increased recently as doctors use it as an alternative to opioids to treat a number of conditions including chronic pain. The resulting prevalence of the drug has caused an increase in cases of abuse. Gabapentin can increase the euphoric effects of other opiates when they are taken together or block the effects of medications used for addiction treatment. An increasing number of overdose deaths are being found to involve Gabapentin. While it requires a prescription, Gabapentin is not currently classified as a controlled substance which has made it difficult for law enforcement to stop its spread.
This Gabapentin Urine test is not intended for therapeutic monitoring. The purpose of this test is to detect the presence of Gabapentin when a person is suspected of abusing it. Gabapentin is typically detectable for 1-3 days is urine but may be detectable longer depending on a number of factors including how much a person has taken.
