HPV Swab Test
What is HPV?
Human Papillomavirus, or HPV, is a virus spread through skin-to-skin contact, most commonly during sexual contact. HPV can be transmitted from one person to another even when there are no visible symptoms. HPV is very common, and most sexually active people will contract it in their lifetime. Most infections are harmless and are cleared by the body's own immune system within 1-2 years. Some HPV strains cause genital warts and may lead to more serious complications, including cervical, anal, or throat cancer if not treated.
How is HPV linked to cervical cancer?
Over 90% of cervical cancer cases are linked to HPV infections. Certain types of persistent aggressive HPV infection are more likely to cause abnormal cells in the cervix to develop into lesions, which can become cancerous. Testing for HPV is an effective way to identify conditions that may cause cervical cancer before they become more serious.
How is an HPV test performed?
The HPV swab test requires a sample of cervical cells, collected by inserting a small swab into the vaginal opening. The specimen will be collected by the person being tested at a lab collection site. A collection kit and instructions will be provided by lab personnel.
Can men be tested for HPV?
The HPV swab test is intended for biological females only. Any other person concerned about HPV should contact their doctor for testing options.
How long do HPV Swab test results take?
Turnaround for test results is typically 2-5 Business Days.

Detection Period:
A swab test can typically detect HPV within 3 weeks to a few months after infection, or any time after. In some cases, if the virus is present but inactive, it may cause false-negative results. If you test negative, but still have reason to believe you have contracted HPV, consult your doctor.

It is not recommended to take this test during a menstrual cycle.
