Description:
Immunoglobulin Antibody IgA, IgE, IgM, IgG Blood Test
This test measures the levels of 4 classes of immunoglobulins in the blood. Results will include numerical values form Immunoglobulin A (IgA), Immunoglobulin E (IgE), Immunoglobulin G (IgG), and Immunoglobulin M (IgM). Immunoglobulins, or antibodies, are an important part of the immune system which fight off bacteria, viruses and other foreign organisms. Measuring Immunoglobulin levels can help evaluate a person's immune system.
- Immunoglobulin M (IgM): The first antibodies produced to combat a new infection. The levels typically increase over several weeks and then begin to lower as IgG antibodies are produced.
- Immunoglobulin G (IgG): IgG antibodies begin to develop shortly after infection and may persist for a long period of time. In some cases, IgG antibodies provide long-term or lifelong protection from future infections.
- Immunoglobulin A (IgA): IgA antibodies are typically found in the mucous membranes of the body and protect from infection in areas such as the sinuses, lungs, intestines, and stomach.
- Immunoglobulin E (IgE): IgE antibodies are typically produced as part of the body's response to various allergens.
This test may be ordered when a person has signs of an immunoglobulin deficiency including recurring infections, chronic inflammation, or chronic diarrhea. Immunoglobulin testing can aid in diagnosing or monitoring treatment for some types of cancers or autoimmune disorders.
Turnaround for this test is typically 2-5 business days.
