What is Interleukin-2?

This test measures levels of Interleukin-2 in the blood. Interleukin-2 is a cytokine, a type of protein that plays an important role in the body's immune system.  IL-2 helps regulate the body's response to certain illnesses or infections by directing the activities of white blood cells.  IL-2 therapy is sometimes used as part of the treatment for people with certain types of cancer, including Melanoma and kidney cancer.  IL-2 can stimulate the immune system to more effectively destroy tumor cells.
