Description:
This test measures Manganese levels in the blood. Manganese is a mineral that contributes to a number of healthy processes in the body including bone formation, wound healing, glucose production, and cholesterol processing. Most people get healthy levels of manganese in their diet. Manganese exposure can occur in industrial settings where products such as steel, aluminum, textiles, glass, cosmetics, paint, and batteries are produced. Pollution from mining or factory runoff can also cause an increase in environmental manganese levels. Prolonged exposure to higher than normal levels of manganese can lead to disorders affecting the lungs, brain, or nervous system. Symptoms of toxicity can include, difficulty concentrating, memory problems, irritability, tremors, facial spasms, lack of muscle coordination, and difficulty breathing.
Testing for manganese levels is typically ordered when a person works in or lives near an industrial setting where there is a risk of exposure, especially if they are experiencing symptoms of toxicity.
Turnaround for this test is typically 3-8 business days.
