Osmolality Blood Test

Test Code: 002071
Specimen Type: Blood

Description:

Osmolality Blood Test

The Osmolality Blood Test provides a measure of the dissolved particles such as sodium, potassium, chloride, glucose, and urea in a blood sample.  Osmolality is measured to evaluate the body's water and electrolyte balance.  The primary particle which contributes to osmolality in blood is sodium.  Low sodium in the blood can be a sign of excessive fluid intake, water retention, or a condition affecting the kidneys' ability to produce urine.  People with diabetes may have increased blood glucose levels which can contribute to abnormal osmolality as well.

An Osmolality blood test is typically ordered when a person exhibits symptoms of low sodium levels such as excessive thirst, lethargy, headache, confusion, nausea, or seizures.  It can also be used to aid in the diagnosis of conditions such as dehydration, diabetes, and kidney damage.  An Osmolality Blood Test may be ordered along with a BUN (Blood Urea Nitrogen) and Glucose Blood Test.  A Urine Osmolality test is also available.

Turnaround time for the Osmolality Serum test is typically 2-3 business days.
