Rabies Titer Blood Test Online

Description:

Rabies Titer Blood Test (Labcorp)

The Rabies Titer test is used to evaluate a person’s protection from the Rabies virus.  The Rabies RFFIT (Rapid Fluorescent Focus Inhibition Test) measures antibodies that neutralize the rabies virus to prevent it from infecting cells.  The purpose of a Rabies titer test is to determine if someone who has received a rabies vaccination is still adequately protected.  According to WHO (World Health Organization) guidelines, an antibody level greater than or equal to 0.5 IU/ml is an adequate response to vaccination.  For someone with antibodies below this level, a booster vaccine is typically recommended, especially if they are at frequent risk of rabies virus exposure.

Rabies is a virus that infects the central nervous system.  The virus is typically transmitted through the saliva of an infected animal.  Rabies infections can cause serious health complications and are often fatal.

People who work with animals including veterinary professionals and students are often required to receive a rabies vaccination.  The frequency of titer testing post-vaccination to determine antibody levels will vary depending on the guidelines of the person's industry and their risk of exposure.  It is common to require a Rabies titer test every 2-3 years.  In cases where a person is bitten by an animal or otherwise exposed to the rabies virus, a titer test may be required to ensure they are protected from infection.

The rabies titer test is performed at Kansas State University Rabies Laboratory.  For additional information, please visit the KSU website.

It is important to note that the Rabies titer test is not intended to check if a person has been exposed to or infected with the Rabies virus.  Anyone who suspects they have had rabies exposure should seek immediate medical treatment.

This test is offered for human testing only.  Request A Test does not offer animal testing.

The Rabies Titer test is run at the Kansas State University Rabies Laboratory, one of only two commercial laboratories recognized by the Center for Disease Control for performing the test.  As a result, the turnaround time for this test can be up to 4-6 weeks.
