Description:
T3 Uptake Blood Test (Labcorp)
The T3 Uptake test is used to help evaluate thyroid function. The majority of the hormones T3 and T4 are bound to a carrier protein known as thyroxin-binding globulin (TBG) which helps transport them throughout the body. The T3 uptake test helps to estimate the amount of TBG in the blood which in turn can help to determine how much T3 and T4 are unbound or free and able to affect the body's systems.
It can be difficult to determine if a person's results for other thyroid tests such as T3 and T4 are accurate without using a T3 uptake test as a guide. While the results of a T3 Uptake test are not particularly helpful by themselves, when used in conjunction with the results of other thyroid tests, this test can help to see if someone is suffering from disorders such as Hyperthyroidism or Hypothyroidism. The results from this test should be evaluated by a medical professional.
The T3 Uptake is often ordered with other thyroid tests when someone is experiencing symptoms associated with thyroid disorders. It is also commonly used as a component of routine thyroid testing to help evaluate thyroid function. This test is also included in our Thyroid Basic Panel with TSH which bundles several thyroid tests together in one package.
Turnaround time for the T3 Uptake test is typically 1 business day.
