Description:
Tetanus Titer Blood Test (Labcorp)
The Tetanus Titer test is used to check for immunity to Tetanus. Tetanus is caused by a bacterial infection that usually enters the body through open wounds. Tetanus can cause painful muscle contractions, especially around the jaw and neck, impeding a person's ability to breathe. To maintain immunity, Tetanus boosters are usually required every ten years.
Verifying immunity to Tetanus is especially important for people who are at high risk for infection. Tetanus often develops from the following injuries:
- Puncture wounds — including from splinters, body piercings, tattoos, injection drugs
- Gunshot wounds
- Compound fractures
- Crush injuries
- Burns
- Surgical wounds
- Ear infections
- Dental infections
- Animal bites
- Infected foot ulcers in people with diabetes
- Infected umbilical stumps in newborns born of inadequately immunized mothers
Results for this test provide a numerical value for the antibody level which can be compared to a reference interval to determine immune status.
The Tetanus titer test is available by itself or as part of the TDAP (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis) Panel.
Turnaround time for this test is typically 2-3 business days.
