What is Trichomoniasis?
Trichomoniasis or "Trich," is a common sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the parasite Trichomonas vaginalis. Though anyone can contract trich, it is more common in women. Many infections are asymptomatic, but symptoms can include itching or burning around the genital area, abnormal discharge, and painful urination. Trichomonas is treatable with antibiotics.
How Can You Test for Trichomoniasis?
The Trichomoniasis swab test requires a sample of cervical cells, collected by inserting a small swab into the vaginal opening. The specimen will be collected by the person being tested at a lab collection site. A collection kit and instructions will be provided by lab personnel.
How to Test for Trichomoniasis in Males
The Trich Swab Test is appropriate for biological females only. A Trichomonas Urine Test that can be taken by anyone is also available.
How Long Does a Trich Test Take?
The turnaround for test results is typically 2-5 business days.

Detection Period:
A swab test can detect trichomoniasis as early as 5 days after exposure. In some people, it may take up to 28 days to be detectable.
Requirements:
This test is for biological females only.
It is not recommended to take this test during a menstrual cycle.
Collection Instructions:
The lab attendant will provide a collection kit. Please review specimen collection instructions with lab personnel.
- Wash your hands with soap and water prior to collecting the specimen.
- Twist and pull the cap to remove the FLOQSwab from the plastic sleeve.
- Hold the FLOQSwab at the red mark.
- Standing in a comfortable position, use the free hand to spread the skin of the vaginal opening, while carefully inserting the swab up to the red mark.
- Gently rotate the swab for 10-30 seconds.
- Place the swab back into the tube until you hear a CLICK. After collection, hand the swab to a lab attendant for processing. Wash your hands with soap and water.
