Description:
Uric Acid Blood Test (Labcorp)
What is a uric acid blood test?
This test measures Uric Acid levels in the blood. Uric Acid is produced by the breakdown of cells as they grow old and deteriorate.
Uric acid and gout
Most uric acid is filtered by the kidneys and removed from the body in urine. If too much uric acid builds up in the blood it can form into crystals in the joints causing a form of arthritis known as gout. Excess uric acid can also cause the development of kidney stones or cause kidney failure. Impaired kidney function can affect the body's ability to properly remove uric acid. Elevated uric acid levels can also be caused by conditions that cause an increase in cell breakdown such as certain types of cancer treatment.
What causes high uric acid?
Elevated levels of uric acid can be caused by:
- Heavy alcohol consumption
- High blood pressure
- High sugar diet
- Obesity
- Kidney failure
- Some medications
A uric acid test may be ordered when someone has common symptoms of gout such as joint pain, especially in the toes. It may also be used to monitor people who have already been diagnosed with gout to evaluate their risk for developing kidney stones. This test is also ordered to monitor uric acid levels in people undergoing radiation treatment or chemotherapy. A Random Urine or 24 Hour Urine Uric Acid test is sometimes ordered along with a blood test for a more comprehensive examination.
How long does a uric acid test take?
Turnaround time for the Uric Acid test is typically 1 business day.
