Apolipoprotein B (Apo B) Blood Test

Apo B

Test Code: 167015
Specimen Type: Blood
Apolipoprotein B Blood Test

Description:

Apolipoprotein B ApoB Blood Test (Labcorp)

What is an Apo B Blood Test?

This test measures the level of Apolipoprotein B (Apo B) in the blood.  Apo B is one of the primary components of LDL aka the "bad" cholesterol.  In general, higher LDL levels are considered to put people at greater risk for heart disease.  However, studies have shown that measuring Apo B levels can actually give a more accurate determination of a person's risk for Coronary Heart Disease than a standard LDL cholesterol test.  Sometimes, a person may have higher than normal Apolipoprotein B even when their LDL normals are normal or only slightly elevated.  In these cases, monitoring Apo B can help to evaluate how much a risk a person is at for developing heart disease.

When should I order an Apo B test?

The online Apo B test is usually ordered along with other tests such as a Lipid Panel or NMR Lipoprofile to assess the risk for heart disease.  These tests can also be useful for someone with a family history of heart disease or other risk factors such as:

  • Obesity
  • A diet high in saturated and/or trans fats
  • Smoking
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Previous cardiac events or stroke
  • Medication that may affect cholesterol levels

The Apo B test can also be used to monitor treatment for high cholesterol.

How long does it take to get results for an Apo B Blood Test?

The turnaround time for the Apolipoprotein B test results is typically 1-3 business days.
