Description:
Apolipoprotein B Blood Test (Labcorp)
This test measures the level of Apolipoprotein B (Apo B) in the blood. Apo B is one of the primary components of LDL aka the "bad" cholesterol. In general, higher LDL levels are considered to put people at greater risk for heart disease. However, studies have shown that measuring Apo B levels can actually give a more accurate determination of a person's risk for Coronary Heart Disease than a standard LDL cholesterol test. In some situations, a person may have higher than normal Apolipoprotein B even when their LDL normals are normal or only slightly elevated. In these cases, monitoring Apo B can help to evaluate how much a risk a person is at for developing heart disease.
The online Apo B test is usually ordered along with other tests such as a Lipid Panel or NMR Lipoprofile to assess risk for heart disease. These tests can also be useful for someone with a family history of heart disease or to monitor treatment for high cholesterol.
The turnaround time for results for the Apolipoprotein B test is typically 1-3 business days.
