Description:
Beta-Hydroxybutyrate Lab Test
This test measures the level of beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) in the blood. B-hydroxybutyrate is one of several chemicals known as ketones. Ketones are produced when the body is not able to utilize glucose (sugar) as energy either because of low blood sugar, insufficient insulin, or an inability to properly utilize insulin. When glucose is unavailable, the body will use fat as an alternative source of energy. Ketones are produced as fat is metabolized. The excessive buildup us ketones in the blood can cause a condition know as ketoacidosis. The body will attempt to flush the excess ketones which can cause increased urination, loss of electrolytes, and dehydration. B-hydroxybutyrate is the most prevalent ketone is cases of ketoacidosis. Diabetic Ketoacidosis is usually associated with type 1 diabetes and rarely with type 2. It can be life-threatening if not treated quickly. Ketoacidosis should not be confused with ketosis, a condition associated with low carbohydrate diets and weight loss plans.
Common symptoms of ketoacidosis include frequent urination, extreme thirst, nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, confusion, fatigue, rapid breathing, rapid heart rate, dry skin, cold hands or feet, and a fruity smell on the breath.
Measuring beta-hydroxybutyrate can help identify if a person is suffering from ketoacidosis. Additional tests such as electrolyte levels, blood glucose, and insulin are often run at the same time.
Turnaround for this test is typically 3-10 business days.
