This test measures Potassium levels in the blood. Potassium is an electrolyte which helps in moving nutrients into cells while moving waste products out. The Potassium test may be used to evaluate an electrolyte imbalance or acid/base imbalance. The most common cause of high potassium levels is kidney disease.
This test is commonly ordered as part of routine general health testing. It can also be done to monitor people with kidney disease, high blood pressure or certain types of heart conditions.
