Description:

Chloride Blood Test

This test is used to measure the level of Chloride in a person's blood.  Chloride is an electrolyte which helps maintain the bodies acid-base balance and fluid levels.  Chloride is also vital in maintaining healthy blood pressure, blood volume, and pH levels in bodily fluids.  Most of the chloride in the body comes from the salt you eat.  Low chloride levels can be caused by conditions such as dehydration or illnesses which cause excessive vomiting.  People whose diet includes too much or too little sodium may suffer from irregular Chloride levels.

Abnormal Chloride levels are often associated with symptoms such as muscle twitches or spasms, problems with breathing, weakness, or confusions which may be caused by disorders affecting the kidneys or adrenal glands.  Some medications, such as those for high blood pressure, heart failure, and liver or kidney disease, can cause an imbalance in electrolytes including chloride.

A Chloride test is usually ordered when someone is experiencing symptoms associated with irregular Chloride levels.  It is also ordered as part of common general health screenings or to evaluate kidney or liver function. This test may also be used to monitor people who are taking medication known to affect the body's electrolyte levels.

A Chloride test can be ordered by itself.  However, it is also available as a component of tests such as an Electrolyte PanelRenal Function Panel, Basic Metabolic Panel (BMP) or a Comprehensive Metabolic Panel.

Turnaround time for a Chloride blood test is typically 1 business day.
