Description:
Copper Blood Test
This test measures the amount of copper in the blood. Copper is a mineral that is essential for a number of bodily functions. Copper toxicity can occur in people with Wilson's disease, a condition that causes copper to build up in tissues throughout the body. Copper deficiency can contribute to certain types of anemia. Low copper levels can be the result of disorders that prevent the proper absorption of minerals and nutrients, such as Celiac Disease or Cystic Fibrosis.
Copper blood testing is usually done to aid in the diagnosis of Wilson's Disease when a person is experiencing symptoms such as nausea, abdominal pain, jaundice, fatigue, tremors, difficulty walking, difficulty swallowing, and muscle contractions. It may also be ordered to help find the cause of atypical or refractory cases of anemia. A Ceruloplasmin test is often ordered along with copper testing. Ceruloplasmin is an enzyme that contains most of the bound copper in the body.
The turnaround for this test is typically 2-4 business days.
