Description:
Cystatin C Blood Test (Labcorp)
The Cystatin C test is typically used to monitor kidney function. Cystatin C is a protein which is filtered through the kidneys. Increased Cystatin C levels typically indicate that the kidney's glomerular filtration rate is impaired. For some people, measurement of Cystatin C has been found to be a more accurate marker for kidney function than Creatinine. In people with liver cirrhosis, obesity, malnourishment and reduced muscle mass, Creatinine levels may not be accurate as a measure of kidney function. In cases of kidney disease, Cystatin C levels have also been shown to come back abnormal earlier that Creatinine levels.
This test is typically ordered when someone is experiencing symptoms of kidney disease or is monitoring their kidney function, especially if they have reason to believe that a Creatinine test would not be accurate.
Turnaround time for the Cystatin C test is typically 3-6 business days.
