Description:
Folate RBC Blood Test (Labcorp)
This test measures the level of Folate in Red Blood Cells. Folate is a vitamin which is part of the B complex series. It plays an important role if a number of bodily functions including the production of red blood cells. Folate cannot be produced by the body so it must come from a person's diet. Foods which are high in folate include green leafy vegetables, citrus, liver, and beans. Deficiency in folate can result in several forms of anemia. Testing for Folate levels in RBC's can be more effective than a regular blood test. Serum folate levels can be affected by a person's recent diet. The concentration of folate in red blood cells is often considered a more accurate measurement of true folate levels in the body's tissues. The Folate RBC test also includes a measurement for Hematocrit, the percentage of the blood which is made up of red blood cells.
Results for this test include measurements for both RBC and serum folate levels. A Vitamin B12 test is often ordered along with folate due to the connected roles these vitamins play in the body.
Turnaround for this test is typically 1-3 business days.
