Description:
Folate Blood Test (Labcorp)
This test measures Folate (Folic Acid), also known as Vitamin B9, levels in the blood. Folate is one of the B vitamins. The body uses folate for growth and development as well as the production of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Folate is not produced naturally by the body and must be supplied by a person's diet. It is found in foods such as liver, citrus, green leafy vegetables, milk, kidney, and yeast. A Folate blood test can help determine the cause of anemia or aid in the diagnosis of malnutrition or malabsorption.
The Folate blood test is typically ordered when someone has symptoms of anemia or vitamin deficiency. It may also be ordered as a follow-up to irregular results from a CBC test such as a low RBC count or a high MCV. This test is also be used to monitor someone who is being treated for folate deficiency.
Folate is also included in the Vitamin B12 and Folate Blood Test.
Turnaround time for the Folate test is typically 1 business day.
