Description:
Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) and Luteinizing Hormone (LH) Blood Test (Labcorp)
This package includes Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) and Luteinizing Hormone (LH), 2 hormone tests that are commonly used to help identify the cause of infertility.
FSH is produced by the pituitary gland. In women, FSH stimulates the growth and maturation of eggs, also known as follicles, in the ovaries during the follicular phase of the menstrual cycle. In men, FSH stimulates the production of sperm in the testicles.
LH is also produced by the pituitary gland. In women, the production of LH at the end of the follicular phase triggers the release of an egg from the follicle, beginning ovulation. LH also stimulates the production of progesterone. In Men, LH stimulates the production of testosterone in the testicles.
The production of FSH and LH are part of a system that involves the pituitary gland, hypothalamus, and other hormones including estradiol, progesterone, and testosterone. When one or more of these components do not function properly it can cause infertility and other health issues. FSH and LH testing are often ordered by one or both partners when a couple is having difficulty conceiving. These tests can also be ordered by women who suspect they are entering menopause or are having irregular menstrual periods. Men who are suffering from decreased sex drive, loss of muscle mass, or low testosterone can also order these tests.
FSH and LH are often ordered with other hormone tests such as progesterone, estradiol, and testosterone. Individual tests for Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) and Luteinizing Hormone (LH) are also available.
Turnaround for these tests is typically 1-2 business days.
