Insulin-like Growth Factor-binding Protein 3 (IGFBP-3) Test

IGFBP-3

Test Code: 140152
Specimen Type: Blood

Description:

Insulin-like Growth Factor-binding Protein 3 (IGFBP-3) Test

This test measures Insulin-Like Growth Factor-Binding Protein 3 (IGFBP-3) in the blood.  IGFBP-3 is the most abundant protein which binds to Insulin-Like Growth Factor 1 (IFG-1) and transports it throughout the body.  Like IGF-1, IGFBP-3 production is linked to Growth Hormone (GH) production and can be used to evaluate GH levels in the body.  Abnormal levels of IGFBP-3 can be indicative of pituitary gland disorders and abnormalities in growth hormone production.  IGFBP-3 can provide a more accurate determination of growth hormone levels than IGF-1 in young children.

This test may be ordered for children with symptoms of abnormal GH production or as a follow up when someone is showing normal levels of IGF-1 but is still suspected of having a Growth Hormone deficiency.

Turnaround time for this test is typically 1-2 business days.

Note: Result turn around times are an estimate and are not guaranteed. Our reference lab may need additional time due to weather, holidays, confirmation/repeat testing, or equipment maintenance.

Requirements:

It is recommended that someone taking Biotin (also known as vitamin B7 or B8, vitamin H, or coenzyme R) stop consumption at least 72 hours prior to the collection of a sample.
