Lead Profile Blood Test

Lead and Protoporphyrin, FEP/ZPP, Lead and Zinc

Test Code: 038158
Specimen Type: Blood

Description:

Lead Profile Blood Test

The Lead Profile Test is used to monitor exposure to lead and aid in the diagnosis of lead poisoning.  Lead and organic lead compounds are found in a number of industrial products including paints, plastics, storage batteries, bearing alloys, insecticides, and ceramics.  In addition to detecting lead in the blood, this test also provides measurements which can indicate blood abnormalities caused by lead poisoning.

This profile includes measurements for lead, free erythrocyte protoporphyrin, and zinc protoporphyrin.  Elevated levels of protoporphyrin may indicate that the body's ability to create new blood cells has been impaired by exposure to lead.

This test provides a more in depth analysis than a standard lead blood test.  People who are just looking for a lead detection test may order the Lead Blood (adult) test.

The Lead Profile test typically sees results in 1-3 business days.

Note: Result turn around times are an estimate and are not guaranteed. Our reference lab may need additional time due to weather, holidays, confirmation/repeat testing, or equipment maintenance.

Incubation Period:

Sampling time is not critical for industrial exposure monitoring. Metals with timing “not critical” have very long elimination half-lives and accumulate in the body over years, some for a lifetime. After a couple of weeks of exposure, specimens can be collected at any time.

Requirements:

This test has no fasting requirements.
