What is norovirus?

Norovirus is caused by a group of viruses called Caliciviridae, the most common of which is GII-4. These viruses cause inflammation of the stomach and intestines.  This condition is known as gastroenteritis.  It is common and highly contagious.  The first norovirus outbreak occurred in Norwalk, OH.  This is why it is sometimes referred to as Norwalk Virus.  The majority of norovirus infections occur during the colder months.

How do you catch norovirus?

Norovirus typically spreads through close contact with someone who has the virus or by touching contaminated surfaces.  The most common cause of norovirus is eating contaminated food or drink that has been handled by someone with the virus.  It may take up to 48 hours after exposure for someone to begin to experience symptoms.

What are the symptoms of norovirus?

Norovirus symptoms are very similar to the common stomach flu.  Symptoms often include nausea, stomach pain, vomiting, and diarrhea.  Some people may experience headaches, fever, and body aches.  Most symptoms resolve within a few days.

How do they test for norovirus?

Because the symptoms of norovirus are similar to other gastrointestinal disorders, testing may be necessary to differentiate it from other types of infections.  Stool testing can identify norovirus or rule it out.  A positive test result for norovirus should be followed up with your doctor, especially if your symptoms persist more than a few days.

Request A Test also offers a variety of other stool tests.

How long does a norovirus test take?

The turnaround for the Norovirus Stool test is typically 4-7 business days.
