Description:

Pre-Op (Surgery) Bloodwork Panel plus HIV and Pregnancy Tests (Labcorp)

This testing panel includes several lab tests that are often taken prior to undergoing surgery.  Blood work is often performed prior to an operation to help ensure that a person is healthy enough to undergo surgery and avoid any potential complications which may arise.  While the tests in this package are common pre-op requirements, it is important to check with your doctor or surgeon to ensure which tests are appropriate for you.  Not all surgeries will have the same pre-op requirements.

The Pre-Op Testing Panel Includes:

  • Complete Blood Count (CBC): A CBC provides a number of measurements including red blood cells (RBC), white blood cells (WBC), hemoglobin, and hematocrit.  These tests can help to ensure you are not anemic and do not have any infections.  A CBC is often ordered after surgery as well.
  • Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP): A CMP measures blood sugar, electrolytes, and values related to liver and kidney function.  These are all important for assessing if a person has any health issues that may complicate their surgery or their ability to recover.
  • Prothrombin Time (PT INR) and  Partial Thromboplastin Time (PTT): These tests evaluate how long it takes your blood to clot.  This can help ensure you do not have any bleeding disorders which could be dangerous during and after surgery.
  • HIV 4th Generation: Since HIV is transmitted through exposure to blood and bodily fluids, some hospitals require a routine HIV screen to ensure that neither the patient nor their doctor is at risk from HIV infection.
  • Pregnancy, Qualitative Blood Test: Pregnancy testing for women is a common requirement. A Quantitative Blood Pregnancy Test with numerical results is also available.

Pre-op testing is normally ordered around one month before surgery.  However. the optimal time to get pre-surgery bloodwork done should be determined by your doctor.

Additional tests may be necessary as determined by your doctor or specialist.  Please see our Pre-op testing category for additional options.

The turnaround for these tests is typically 1-2 business days.
