Description:
Prolactin Blood Test (Labcorp)
This test measures the level of prolactin in the blood. Prolactin is a hormone produced by the pituitary gland whose primary role is in the production of breast milk. Prolactin levels are typically highest during pregnancy and shortly after childbirth. Abnormal prolactin levels may be caused by tumors on the pituitary gland. If left untreated, these can cause infertility in women and loss of sexual function in men.
Prolactin testing is sometimes ordered when someone has symptoms of pituitary tumors such as headaches or visual impairment. It can also be used to monitor the treatment of these tumors. Prolactin can also be ordered by men who are experiencing infertility or erectile dysfunction and women who are having difficulty breastfeeding. Prolactin may be ordered with other hormone tests to help evaluate the cause of infertility in men or women.
Turnaround time for the Prolactin test is typically 1 business day.
