Description:
Measles (Rubeola) Antibody, IgG Titer Test
What is a measles titer?
A measles titer is a blood test that measures IgG antibodies in the blood. These antibodies provide protection from catching the virus Rubeola, more commonly known as German Measles or just Measles. Most people in the United States are vaccinated against measles along with other diseases when they receive the MMR vaccine. The immune system then produces antibodies that make a person immune to contracting measles. People who are infected and recover typically develop a natural immunity. In most cases, vaccination provides lifelong immunity but there are cases where antibody levels wane as a person ages. In these cases, another vaccine may be necessary.
Rubeola (Measles) is a contagious viral infection that is spread through respiratory fluids. Typical symptoms include fever, cough, light sensitivity, red eyes, sore throat, runny nose, white spots inside the mouth, and a rash that appears on the face and then will spread downward to the neck, trunk, arms, legs, and feet. Most people recover after a couple of weeks, but some may develop more serious complications. The risk of further complications is increased for people who are malnourished or have a weakened immune system. Pregnant women who are infected will have a greater likelihood of miscarriage or premature labor.
How do you read measles titer results?
Test results provide a numerical value for the antibody level along with the ranges for negative, equivocal, and positive results. By comparing your value to the reference ranges, a person can determine if they have immunity or not. Typically a result in the negative range means you do not have immunity while a positive result means you do have immunity. An equivocal test results may need to be repeated or it could mean you are on the borderline.
Who should get a measles titer?
This test is typically ordered when someone requires proof of immune status for work or school. It may also be ordered by women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant to ensure they are not at risk of contracting the virus.
The Rubeola Titer may be ordered by itself but is more commonly done as part of an MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) Immunity test. This test is also included in our Immunity Panel which includes other common titer tests.
How long does a measles titer take?
Turnaround time for the Rubeola Antibodies, IgG test is typically 1-3 business days.
