This test measures a person's allergic reaction to the pollen from sunflowers. Sunflowers are native to Mexico but are currently grown all over the world. They possess a large central area that produces a copious amount of pollen which is easily dispersed. This makes them especially problematic for people who have pollen allergies. People who are allergic to sunflowers may also be allergic to other types of flower and tree pollen. If you have a sunflower allergy it is important to check ingredients as sunflower oil and seeds are used in a variety of products.
Allergies are caused by a reaction in the body's immune system. The body identifies certain substances, such as pollen, as harmful and produces IgE antibodies against them.
