Is there a blood test for Raynaud's Disease?

While there is no test for primary Raynaud's, there are blood tests that can help establish the underlying condition causing secondary Raynaud's.  An Antinuclear Antibody (ANA) test looks for antibodies associated with a variety of autoimmune disorders.  A Sedimentation Rate (ESR) test can also be useful as it looks for inflammation in the body.  Other tests that may be helpful include a complete blood count (CBC), a lipid panel (cholesterol), and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) factor.

Raynaud's Disease is a condition that causes arteries in some parts of the body to narrow in response to cold or stress, restricting blood flow.  This condition most commonly affects the extremities, like the toes and fingers, causing periodic numbness or coldness. Raynaud's can also affect the nose, ears, lips, and nipples.  There are 2 forms of Raynaud's Syndrome, primary and secondary.  The cause of primary Raynaud's is unknown.  Secondary Raynaud's is linked to other health conditions.  These can include autoimmune disorders such as Lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, Sjogren's syndrome, and scleroderma.  Other conditions, such as frostbite, smoking, arterial blockage, inflammation, and some types of cancer treatments, can be linked to Raynaud's Disease.

What are the symptoms of Raynaud's Syndrome?

The most common symptoms of Raynaud's disease are cold or numbness in the fingers or toes, areas of the body that turn white or blue, and stinging pain when sensation returns.  Areas with lower blood flow and sensation are more susceptible to injury and infection.
