Trichomonas Test

How it Works

Trichomonas Test (Trich Test)

Trichomonas, also called trich, trichomonas vaginalis, and trichomoniasis is one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases.  Trichomonas infections are usually found in the lower genital tract in women and the urethra in men.  Trichomonas is typically passed through sexual contact from one infected party to another.  Trichomonas often shows no symptoms.  For this reason, it is important to get a trichomonas test (trich test) if you engage in behaviors that put you at risk for infection.

Symptoms of Trichomonas (Trich)

In many cases, trichomonas displays no symptoms.  Women may experience itching, burning, redness, or soreness in the genitals, discomfort while urinating, or vaginal discharge with an unusual odor.  Men may experience itching or irritation inside the penis, burning after urination or ejaculation, or penile discharge.  When symptoms do develop, it may not be until a month or more after the initial infection.   The absence of symptoms is not a reason to avoid getting a trichomonas test (trich test).

Who should get a Trichomonas test (Trich test)?

Trichomonas is easily spread through sexual contact of the genital area.  Though it is not as common, infections can also be spread through anal or oral sexual contact.  Anyone who is sexually active is at risk for trichomonas.  The risk is higher for those who engage in unprotected sex or sex with multiple partners.  The use of condoms or other protective devices lessens but does not eliminate the risk of trichomonas.  It is especially advisable for women to get trichomonas testing (trich testing) as the risk of infection is greater for women than for men.

Why get a Trichomonas test (Trich test)?

Trichomonas can remain in the body for years even if it shows no symptoms.  People infected with trichomonas have an increased risk of contracting or spreading other STD’s including HIV.

Pregnant women with trichomonas have a higher risk of premature births or babies born with low birth weight.

When to get a Trichomonas test (Trich test)

Trichomonas tests (trich tests) are typically most effective at three weeks or more after initial infection.  Anyone who displays symptoms or becomes aware of a sexual partner who has tested positive should seek trichomonas testing (trich testing).  Pregnant women should receive a trichomonas test (trich test) to avoid possible birthing complications.

Trichomonas test (Trich test) preparation

Refrain from urinating 1-2 hours before collection.  Refrain from cleaning the genital area 1-2 hours before collection.  For women, it is preferable that the collection not be taken during menstruation.

Trichomonas test (Trich test) procedure

The trichomonas test (trich test) requires a urine specimen.  The lab attendant will give you a collection cup and direct you to a room with a toilet.  Begin urinating directly into the collection cup.  Collect 20-30 milliliters in the cup and allow the rest of the urine to go into the toilet.  It is important not to fill the cup more than 20-30 milliliters as this may dilute the specimen and reduce the accuracy of the test.

Trichomonas test (Trich test) accuracy

At Request a Test we use only nationally accredited labs with highly trained personnel and state of the art equipment to ensure the highest possible accuracy in your trichomonas test (trich test) results.
