Carbon Dioxide Blood Test

CO2, Carbon Dioxide Total

Test Code: 001578
Specimen Type: Blood

Description:

Carbon Dioxide Blood Test

This test measures Carbon Dioxide (CO2) in the blood.  CO2 is produced in the body during the digestive process.  It is normally carried through the blood to the lungs and is expelled as a person breathes.  The Carbon Dioxide Blood test (CO2 test) may be used to evaluate an oxygen/carbon dioxide or acid/base (pH) imbalance.  These imbalances may be caused by respiratory, kidney or metabolic disorders.

This test is often performed as part of routine general health screening.  CO2 testing may also be ordered when a person has symptoms of oxygen/carbon dioxide imbalance or pH imbalance such as shortness of breath, breathing difficulties, nausea or vomiting.

A Carbon Dioxide Test is also included as part of a Basic Metabolic Panel (BMP), Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP), an Electrolyte Panel and a Renal Function Panel.

Turnaround time for the Carbon Dioxide test is typically 1 business day.

Note: Result turn around times are an estimate and are not guaranteed. Our reference lab may need additional time due to weather, holidays, confirmation/repeat testing, or equipment maintenance.

Requirements:

The Carbon Dioxide test has no fasting requirements.
