Description:

Postpartum Health and Nutrition Lab Testing (Labcorp)

The postpartum period, meaning the period after childbirth is a time when the body is going through a number of changes and adjustments.  During this time, it can be difficult to tell the difference between symptoms that are a normal part of the process the body is going through and ones that may be a sign of more serious complications.  Common symptoms often include fatigue, sleep deprivation, hair loss, stress, anxiety, depression, constipation, nausea, and weakness.  Routine lab tests are often recommended to screen for common post-birth health issues.  One of the most common issues that affect people during the postpartum period is a lack of important vitamins and nutrients.  During pregnancy, the body requires a higher nutrient intake to support the developing fetus.  Post-birth there is a higher risk of nutrient deficiency which can contribute to a number of health issues.  A lack of important vitamins and nutrients can contribute to postpartum depression and other conditions such as diabetes, anemia, and exhaustion. Bloodwork can help to determine what type of dietary changes, supplements, or medication a person could benefit from.

  • Complete Blood Count (CBC): A CBC measures blood levels that can be related to oxygen delivery, anemia, and the immune system.
  • Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP): The CMP includes a number of measurements including blood sugar, electrolytes, protein, and liver enzymes.  Healthy liver function is important for hormone production and metabolism.
  • Copper: Too much or too little copper can contribute to anemia, depression, anxiety, inflammation, and diarrhea.
  • Ferritin: Ferritin is an important part of the body's ability to store and release iron.
  • Iron & Total Iron Binding Capacity (TIBC): 10-30% of postpartum people experience iron deficiency.  This can be caused by the body's higher iron demand during pregnancy and blood loss during pregnancy.
  • Lipid Panel: Cholesterol levels often change during pregnancy and can remain elevated after birth.  Higher levels of total cholesterol and LDL can contribute to an increased risk of heart disease and may be a cause of postpartum depression.
  • Magnesium: Low magnesium can cause fatigue, loss of appetite, cramps, and nausea.
  • Vitamin B12 & Folate: B12 contributes to energy levels, mental health, and brain function.
  • Vitamin D: Lower vitamin D levels can contribute to postpartum depression as well as symptoms like fatigue, anxiety, and slow wound healing.
  • Zinc: The body uses a lot of zinc during pregnancy, especially during the third trimester.  Zinc deficiency can cause exhaustion, anxiety, difficulty sleeping, and weakened immune response.

Postpartum bloodwork is usually done at least once, often around 6 weeks post-birth.  Depending on the results of these tests and the symptoms a person is experiencing, additional testing may be done at regular intervals to monitor any health concerns.

Request A Test also offers a Postpartum Hormone Panel.

Turnaround for these tests is typically 3-5 business days.
