What are the most commonly ordered blood tests?

Ordering your own lab testing is a great way to take responsibility for your own health.  But where do you start?  These are some of the most common tests that can provide valuable information and help to screen for a variety of potential health issues that might be sneaking up on you.

Complete Blood Count (CBC): A CBC blood test provides a variety of measurements including red blood cells, white blood cells, hemoglobin, hematocrit, and platelet count.  This test can help identify issues like infection, cancer, and anemia.

Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP):  A CMP blood test, sometimes referred to as a chemistry panel, provides 14 measurements related to a number of areas.  This test includes blood sugar (glucose), protein, electrolytes, calcium, BUN (blood urea nitrogen), creatinine, liver enzymes, and more.  The CMP is a great all-around test for checking the health of your heart, liver, kidney, and metabolic functions.

Lipid Panel: A lipid panel looks at your cholesterol levels.  Maintaining healthy cholesterol levels is important for lowering your risk of heart disease.

Hemoglobin A1C: The CDC estimates that about 13% of adults in the US have diabetes.  A Hemoglobin A1C blood test measures your blood sugar levels for the past several months.  These results can help determine if you are at risk for developing diabetes or may already be diabetic.  Knowing your A1C level can help you and your doctor decide if you need lifestyle changes like a better diet and more exercise or medication to about future complications.  

Thyroid Levels: The thyroid plays an important role in many of your body's systems including metabolism, digestion, heart and muscle function, brain development, and bone maintenance.  There are a number of different tests for thyroid function but a good place to start is with a general test such as a Thyroid Panel with TSH or a TSH, Free T3, Free T4 Panel.  Depending on your medical history, a more thorough thyroid test may be recommended. 

Inflammation Markers:  Even if you're in otherwise great health, you still might be at risk for events like a heart attack or stroke.  Blood tests like Homocysteine and C-Reactive Protein (CRP) High Sensitivity can see if you are at risk from factors that otherwise may go unnoticed.   

Sexually Transmitted Diseases:  A yearly STD check is a good idea for anyone who is sexually active.  Many STDs can go months or years without showing any symptoms but cause serious health complications if left untreated.  Some of the most common STDs include HIV, Herpes, Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Syphilis, and Trichomonas. 

Essential Vitamins and Nutrients:  Minerals like Iron, Ferritin, Magnesium, and Zinc and nutrients like Vitamin B12 and Vitamin D are essential for good health.  Testing your levels with a Mineral Panel or Nutrition Panel can help determine if you need to adjust your diet or consider taking additional supplements.
